Over the last 40 years, diabetes has become a major "Achilles' heel" for Americans. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports a dramatic increase in diagnosed diabetes cases, particularly Type 2. This is largely attributed to the rise in obesity, sedentary lifestyles, and poor diets in the U.S. The chronic, long-term complications of diabetes — like heart disease, kidney failure, and blindness place a tremendous burden on individuals and the healthcare system.
